Five Generations of Carwardines

18th century Bristol was a flourishing commercial port with elegant tea clippers regularly to be seen returning from plantations in India, Ceylon and the Far East.

It was in this setting that Edmund Carwardine was apprenticed to the trade in the 1860s. His son Stephen followed him in 1888 and subsequently set up his own account.

It was his son, also named Stephen, who in turn guided the now established firm through the difficult years of two World Wars, withstanding severe rationing and the ravages inflicted on Bristol by the Luftwaffe.

Post war, he further developed the business until his son Christopher took over the reins in 1973.

In 1981 his son Martin Stephen Carwardine joined the company and in 1991, in the same fashion as his great grandfather around 90 years before, Martin himself set up his own account.

The same traditional standards continue into the 21st century, an art only few have mastered, bringing you to a world of coffees to experience and savour.


Why we get our chocolates from Sarunds.

Sarunds - Story

The owner, Robert Verdonk, recognised a need to provide the public with fresh, high quality Belgian chocolates. Once a week, he set off to Belgium in his van to collect the goods personally.

He soon realised how valuable the ability to offer fresh continental chocolates was to retailers, and before long, he was taking orders for a host of UK chocolate shops on his weekly trips.

The business continued to expand and, outgrowing the shop, Robert focused on meeting the demand for fresh Belgian chocolate in Britain.

House of Sarunds was created with the mission of offering retailers a wider range of continental confectionery that could then be offered to the customer.

Maintaining its rapid growth and developing its links within Belgium, House of Sarunds constantly sought to develop its range. Following Robertís retirement in 1999, the reins were handed to Peter Martin, then Managing Director at HOS, and his wife, Jackie.

Having already run a successful chocolate shop themselves, the husband and wife team set about developing the company further. With Peterís business and financial acumen paired with Jackieís artistic flair and retail knowledge, House of Sarunds continued to flourish.

When a new premises was secured in 2001, the company was provided with the facility to expand its services beyond any of its competitors.

Today, the House of Sarunds team continues to work tirelessly to provide the impeccable service and high quality confectionery our customers deserve.

The Environment. Sarunds do that by continually monitoring the way our goods are packaged - reducing the non-recyclable elements wherever possible for minimal environmental impact. Sarunds actively seek suppliers who share our commitment to environmental issues.

Genetically Modified Ingredients. Itís simple. We never knowingly sell products with GM ingredients.

Fair Trade Products. Sarunds are proud to stock one of the largest ranges of Fair Trade confectionery and chocolate in the UK. They do not only encourage their existing suppliers to become Fair Trade accredited, but they seek this certification when looking for new suppliers.
